Mission of Kakkeri In my last circular I had mentioned about the condition of the church of Kakkeri. There is urgent need of repairs to the roof to be done inorder to avoid further damage to the structure. We are waiting for an estimate of the repair works. The parish of Kakkeri was handed over to us in 1985. Ever since then the Community has been involved in the all round development of the mission. The SMMI Sisters joined the mission in 1996. Through their hard work and efforts a project funded by Caritas was sanctioned. At the moment 56 Self Help Groups are functioning in the area. The women have been made conscious of their rights and responsibilities. They have now joined the main stream of life in the village. 5 of them are Panchayat Members, and do take active part in the administration. Their voice carries weight. Recently Kakkeri is declared "No Alcohol Zone". The women see to it that no liquor is sold in the village. Visible signs of Spiritual growth are seen in the life of the people. At the morning adoration there are a sizeable number of men and women who spend time before the Eucharistic Lord. Our deep appreciation to Fr. Tony and Sr. Carmeline and the community for this renewal and empowerment of women. |
